About Optimism

What is Optimist International?

One of the best kept secrets in Civic Organizations, Optimist International was founded in 1919 in Louisville, KY with 13 clubs. Today there are more than 2500 clubs worldwide, including Nepal, Africa, India and Korea. Most of our clubs are in the US, Canada and the Caribbean. With our focus on “Bring Out The Best in Youth” and improving ourselves as well as our community we are a little different from other civic organizations. In 1922, the Optimist Creed, as written by Christian D. Larson, was adopted as the official creed of the organization. As Optimists we repeat this Creed sometime during all our meetings.

What is An Optimist?

An Optimist is an individual that believes by helping their community and the youth that they are improving more than themselves, they are sending waves of optimism throughout the world. Our upbeat outlook, and our commitment to creating a more optimistic future for kids is what differentiates Optimist Clubs from any other volunteer opportunity.

Communities in the United States, Canada, the nations of the Caribbean and other countries throughout the world have been touched by the powerful, positive force of Optimist Club Members. We are now have clubs in 28 countries across the world with almost 2500 clubs. We impact 6 Million youth annually. Our Junior Optimist program has over 15,000 youth participating in JOI clubs. From sponsoring youth athletic leagues, to weatherizing the homes of the elderly, to conducting oratorical contests for young people – Optimist Clubs are responding to the special needs of our local communities.

Although we come from all walks of life, Optimist Club Members share one common trait. We know that we can make a difference in the lives of others. On average each Optimist member affects 65 youth each year. If Rio Rancho has an Optimist club of 20 members that is 1300 youth touched by that club.

Mission/Vision Statement

By providing hope and positive vision, Optimists bring out the best in kids. As far as the eye can see and as much as the mind can imagine, To help every child achieve success in a changing world .

Optimism is More Than Youth

Part of Optimism is improving yourself. We have the Personal Growth & Involvement program to stretch the member’s Optimist knowledge and involvement in the club, the District and Optimist International. The Professional Development Program is designed to improve the member’s professional life and career through structured modules that incrementally develop critical business skills.
